Our retreat is based at the Jesuit retreat house “San Ignacio”in the beautiful seaside village of Celorio/Llanes,on the Cantabrian coast of the ancient Principality of Asturias, in the heart of “green Spain”. Llanes,a walled town and fishing port, has long been a favourite summer resort for Spaniards,with its fine beaches and the natural backdrop of the Cuera mountains.
The retreat house,with its historic core and modern facilities, has very extensive private grounds which stretch along the coast,providing ample opportunity for relaxation and meditation.
For those who have only experienced the Spain of the “Costas”,this is a very different world and often reminds visitors of Cornwall.

In addition to a full programme of talks and liturgies,we shall enjoy excursions to:

• Oviedo, ancient capital of Asturias (pop.200,000),with its great Cathedral of San Salvador,for centuries a place of pilgrimage; the pre-Romanesque World Heritage treasures and the thriving modern city. The local drink is cider.
• The Mountain Sanctuary of Our Lady of Covadonga,with its famous Escolania (Boys’Choir),from where the 700 year Reconquest of Spain for Christianity was launched in the 8th century
• The Cistercian Monastery of Valdedios
• The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana,housing the precious Lignum Crucis relic and celebrating in 2006 a Jubilee Year, with plenary indulgence ,a privilege shared only with Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela.
• The beautiful mountain National Park of the Picos de Europa, a paradise for ramblers,mountaineers and lovers of wildlife.
